Canada’s tariffs on U.S. precious metals imports have not been lifted – Finance Department

Despite misinformation circulating on both sides of the border earlier this week, Canada’s tariffs against U.S. imports of precious metals, including a 25% surcharge on gold, silver, platinum and palladium products, have not been removed or reduced and remain in effect, according to the Canadian government.​​​To address the U.S.’s unwarranted tariffs, Canada has introduced its largest ever retaliatory tariff package, a Finance Department official told Kitco News. This includes tariffs on $60 billion in U.S. imports, covering consumer goods as well as steel, aluminum and certain other metal products, plus $35.6 billion in auto imports.​​​To ensure that Canada’s tariff response is calibrated to respond to the U.S. while limiting the economic impact on Canada, on April 15, we announced a temporary, targeted, six-month relief to give Canadian companies more time to adjust their supply chains and reduce their reliance on U.S. suppliers.​The temporary relief applies to certain registered entities that support public health, public safety and national security, as well as goods used in the production, processing or packaging of food and beverages.​Goods used for all other purposes, such as retail consumer products and steel used in construction or infrastructure, face tariffs without reductions, and the scope of products covered by Canada’s counter-tariffs, including certain precious metals products, remains unchanged.​Based on the latest data from the Canadian government, the impact on precious metals trade between Canada and the United States is swift and significant.​Canada’s tariffs are designed to target key U.S. sectors while also minimizing the impact on Canadian businesses.​A Finance Department official told Kitco News that effective March 4, 2025, certain goods imported into Canada and originating in the United States will be subject to a 25% Canadian surtax. As of March 13, 2025, a second list of products will become subject to a 25% Canadian surtax.​Imports into Canada may fall under tariff item number 9993.00.00 and will not be subject to duty on the condition that the goods are temporarily imported into Canada, are imported in quantities not more than reasonable for the specified use, and will be subsequently exported.
