Record price rises drive unprecedented interest in gold, silver and platinum

Gold has been performing better than expected and UK investors are paying close attention. On Monday, the Royal Mint released official sales data for the first quarter of the 2025-2026 financial year. The Mint reported that online gold sales hit record levels between April and June – not just gold, but also silver and platinum. The Mint said in a press release that gold set five new highs in GBP, topping £2,500 in April, spurring unprecedented participation from UK investors. The report also noted strong demand for silver, with silver hitting £27 an ounce in June for the first time since 2011. Silver sales rose 51% while platinum sales surged 188% compared to the same quarter a year ago. However, higher prices in the precious metals sector have also created a strong dual market. The data showed the number of customers selling precious metals back to the Royal Mint’s vaults across all three metals. The value of gold coins sold reached an all-time high, up 75% quarter-on-quarter and 55% year-on-year. The Mint said that despite the sell-off, bullion purchases still outpaced sales by a ratio of 6:1, indicating continued demand for the precious metal. Stuart O’Reilly, head of market research at the Royal Mint, said the quarter had seen a significant uptick in UK precious metals investment. “We are seeing strategic behaviour from investors looking to rebalance portfolios and rotate into silver and platinum. The fact that silver and platinum activity has risen in tandem with gold’s rally suggests that UK investors are becoming increasingly aware of the value of other precious metals, with silver and platinum often following gold’s lead during strong bull runs. It’s not just bullion that’s seen unprecedented demand. The Mint said its DigiGold product has also seen strong growth, particularly in silver and platinum. Mint reported that digital gold sales increased 103% year-over-year, while digital platinum sales increased 798% and digital silver sales increased 1,158% compared to Q1 2024.
