Gold and silver rose slightly after a significant increase in tensions in the Middle East over the weekend, although market response was largely muted by the gravity of the recent military action. The United States has carried out strikes against three of Iran’s remaining nuclear sites, a major escalation in the regional conflict. The most significant target was the Fordow fuel refinery, a heavily fortified facility built about 300 feet underground in a mountain near Qom, located two hours south of Tehran. The complexity of the target required the deployment of a 15-ton bomb, the largest non-nuclear weapon in the US arsenal, which only US forces have the ability to effectively deploy. The operation involved seven B-2 stealth bombers, the only aircraft capable of carrying such a large weapon, which dropped six bunker-busters to ensure the complete destruction of the Fordow site. President Trump confirmed that the site had been “destroyed” in the coordinated strike. Two additional nuclear sites were neutralized using Tomahawk missiles launched from a submarine located in what sources suggest is the Persian Gulf. President Trump has issued a stark warning that further attacks could follow if Iran fails to seek peace with Israel or if any US forces or military installations are attacked. These warnings have proven insufficient to deter Iranian action, as multiple missiles were fired against US military bases in Qatar on Monday. While no casualties or injuries were reported from the retaliatory attacks, the incident significantly increases the probability of further conflict.
