Market jitters increased today after White House officials confirmed that the United States would continue to impose tariffs of up to 54% on Chinese imports, adding to the 20% tariffs Trump imposed in February over the crisis. Last week, President Donald Trump introduced a sweeping overhaul of U.S. tariff policy, creating a minimum 10% import tariff on almost all goods entering the United States. The move represents a fundamental shift in America’s approach to international trade. US President Donald Trump has dismantled a 75-year-old global trading system with a new 10% base US tariff on goods from all countries and higher reciprocal tariffs for countries his administration says have high barriers to US imports. The European Union will face a 20% tariff rate, while Vietnam faces 45%, South Korea 25%, India 26%, Taiwan 32% and Thailand 36%. Imports from Brazil, Singapore and the UK will still be subject to a 10% base tariff. Notably absent from Trump’s list of increased tariffs is Russia, despite maintaining a $2.5 billion trade surplus with the US in 2024, according to the US Trade Representative’s office.
