Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) has proposed using gold certificates, paper claims on U.S. gold, or Federal Reserve revenues to fund Bitcoin purchases in a budget-neutral manner. The U.S. gold reserve is not marked to market; Congress would have to pass legislation to revalue it. The Bureau of Economic Analysis announced yesterday that the US gross domestic product showed economic growth of 2.4% in the fourth quarter of 2024. The data came in slightly better than expected as economists were looking for an unchanged reading of 2.3%. The economic data did not have much of an impact on gold prices as the precious metal saw strong upward momentum. Spot gold was last trading at $3717 per tael. Updated estimates from the Atlanta Fed’s GDP tracker show the economy contracted 1.8% in the quarter. Continued fears over slowing economic activity helped push gold prices above $3700 per tael.
