And consumers are starting to take advantage, cashing in on the higher price as gold sees its third consecutive daily gain of more than $100 this month. In an interview with Kitco, Tobina Kahn, president of jewelry sales at Kahn Estate Jewelers, said she is seeing a new rush of customers selling their old jewelry, while some consumers were hesitant to sell when prices were below $3,600 per ounce. Kahn said their behavior has changed dramatically. The surge in recycling activity comes as gold prices trade near record highs above $4,200 per ounce, up 29% so far this year. Kahn added that her view is not in line with current gold prices, as some consumers are selling cherished heirlooms to pay off debt. “Consumers are continuing to sell their jewelry, she said. Although her clients don’t fear a complete economic collapse, Kahn said some of the comments she’s heard are that higher gold prices are helping to offset the free-falling stock prices that have hurt retirement funds. While gold prices may see increased volatility, Kahn said she expects gold sales to remain strong for the foreseeable future. Even in a volatile market, she said she doesn’t see gold prices falling below $3,600 an ounce again. She added that even if President Donald Trump can make a trade deal and resolve the tariff issue, the global trade war has caused significant damage to the economy. She said this uncertainty is the new normal. Kahn said she expects the Federal Reserve to eventually cut interest rates to support economic activity, making gold more attractive as opportunity costs decline.

Although higher gold prices are driving sellers out, Kahn said she expects more buyers to enter the market as the momentum fades. Consumers are starting to see the utility of gold now, and that makes it even more attractive, she continued.
